Tolerance Design

Usually associated to geometric tolerances, but should be applied to all parameters that are critical. (i.e., transistors, resistors, drop tests, etc.) This is a essential process in any six sigma program.

Experiments that are carried out to ascertain all tolerances that have the most effect on any action or reaction and how to modify the tolerances to best reduce these actions or reactions at the lowest possible cost. An act of developing an explanation for a product?s performance from any given set of desired actions or reactions on the product.

During the initial process design of all the required components, one arranges components and associated component tolerance parameters developed in an ongoing process so that one can then make important improvements to the process. Associated with design margins and statistical tolerances.

One of the steps in the Taguchi Approach to Design Optimization for Quality and Cost.
