Systematic sampling

Methodology for sampling in which units are selected from the population at a regular interval (e.g., once an hour, every other lot, etc.). This is used for many SPC, (statistical process control), control charts like X Bar and R Bar charts.

One reason for this type of sampling is to see if the process has any variations due to different times of the day, shift workers changing, temperature changes during day vs night times, etc.

For additional detailed information on SPC, (statistical process control), see our statistical process control overview and X bar and R bar control charts.

Also see Random sampling.
